The commission arrived in March of last year — a single photograph, taken from a window of the house, of the lake at five in the afternoon.
The room was empty. The light was the entire brief.
Over the following eight months, we made thirty-six pieces for the house: a long dining table in walnut, a pair of bronze lanterns for the entry, a low library sofa in raw linen, a single marble bench for the window where the photograph was taken.
When the house was finished, we returned to take one more photograph from the same window. The light was the same. The room was not empty.
